History of American Sun Electric
American Sun Electric (formerly American SunCo, Inc.) was originally founded by inventor and scientist Miles Maiden of Blue Hill, ME out of an interest in solar energy systems. The company primarily focused on solar tracking devices, and was funded by grants from the United States Department of Energy and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. American Sun also gained contracts from the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Airforce. The company also was involved in residential and commercial solar PV array design, with installation and certification being carried out by Terry Wessel of Wessel Electric, Inc. budding a professional relationship.
Miles' adapted his knowledge of UltraViolet from its use harvesting solar energy to its use in personal water purification. Following the development of his new technology Miles founded Hydro-Photon, Inc. In 1999 Hydro-Photon received its first patent for the SteriPEN®. The SteriPEN® is now sold at L.L.Bean, REI, Campmor, amongst other worldwide distributors. For more information visit their website: SteriPEN®
In 2004 Miles chose to focus on the advancement of Hydro-Photon Inc. and American SunCo was acquired by Terry Wessel of Wessel Electric Inc., commencing Solar PV sales and design.
In 2007 Terry became certified by NABCEP as a recognized Solar Photovoltaic installer, qualifying his systems for the Maine State Solar Rebate program (See the "Resources" tab for the link to this application).
Since 2004 Terry has been designing and installing custom Solar PV electrical systems and has specialized mostly in Grid-Tie systems. The primary advantage to these systems is the elimination of the need for batteries that can be costly and sometimes can be a maintenance worry when dealing with the cold Maine climate.
